Our municipalities provide childcare and schools to ensure that children can grow up in a nurturing environment.

Child care in Sweden includes preschool, after-school care, and educational care (family day care). It is available for children from age one until they start school. Municipalities are responsible for providing child care, but there are also private options. Child care aims to support children’s development and learning through play, rest, and educational activities.

In our region, we have a network of preschools, after-school programs, and educational care services for families with children. All preschools are required to provide a safe and stimulating environment for the children. It’s a good idea to apply well in advance to secure a spot; contact your relocation counselor or the municipality for more information.

Preschool is an educational program for children ages 1–5. It follows a curriculum that emphasizes the importance of play for children’s learning and development. All children are entitled to public preschool starting in the fall semester of the year they turn three. Public preschool is free of charge and includes 15 hours per week. In addition, all children aged 1 and older are entitled to preschool hours commensurate with their parent’s work schedule.

Elementary Schools:Our elementary schools provide a safe and stimulating environment for children to learn and grow. Preschool Class: For children who are 6 years old. Lower Elementary: Grades 1–3, for children who are 7–9 years old. Middle Elementary: Grades 4–6, for children who are 10–12 years old. Upper elementary school: Grades 7–9, for children aged 13–15

High Schools:In our municipalities of Lycksele, Arvidsjaur, Storuman, and Vilhelmina, there are high schools offering programs in the natural sciences, social sciences, technology, vocational studies, and much more. Our high schools have modern facilities and dedicated teachers who will help you achieve your goals. High school is for students aged 16–19.

After-school programs are offered to children ages 6–12 before and after the school day, as well as during school breaks. These programs complement school by providing meaningful after-school activities and fostering a sense of community.

Students in preschool class, elementary school, and special education elementary school (does not apply to children in preschool) are entitled, under certain conditions, to free transportation to and from school. Contact your home municipality for more information about regulations regarding distance, schedules, and pick-up and drop-off locations. Children who live more than 3 km from school are often eligible to ride the school bus, though local variations and regulations may apply.
