We have everything we need right here, although sometimes it may be necessary to travel to other municipalities to receive specialized medical or dental care.
Health Care and Health
Our region has several health centers, clinics, and both private and public healthcare providers. Most healthcare services are provided at local health centers and clinics, where medical staff work together to offer care and treatment. Health centers provide primary care, which includes medical examinations, care, and treatment for common conditions and illnesses.
For more specialized care, patients may be referred to a hospital. Hospitals offer both emergency care and scheduled care. To get an appointment with a specialist at a hospital, you usually need a referral from your primary care physician. The nearest hospital for several of our municipalities is Lycksele Hospital, which is an acute care hospital strategically located in the center of Västerbotten County. The hospital provides emergency care and obstetric services. Other hospitals are located in Piteå, Skellefteå, and Umeå.
Dental Care
Dental care is available to everyone. In some of our municipalities, children are given priority, and adults may need to travel to a neighboring municipality to receive dental care.

Health Care and Health for EU and Third-Country Nationals Moving to Sweden
Access to healthcare:
EU citizens and citizens of third countries who move to Sweden and plan to live here for more than one year must register with the Swedish Tax Agency. Once registered, you will receive a personal identification number and will automatically be enrolled in the Swedish healthcare system.
Registration in the population register entitles you to the same health care services as Swedish citizens, including primary care, specialty care, and hospital care.
Health Insurance:
Citizens of the EU and third countries who are registered in the Swedish population register are covered by the Swedish health insurance system and pay the same patient copayments as Swedish citizens.
Dental Care:
EU and third-country nationals who are registered in the Swedish population register are entitled to subsidized dental care under the same conditions as Swedish citizens.
Child Care:
Children of EU and third-country nationals who are registered in Sweden are entitled to free medical and dental care until they turn 18.
